Top 10 Healthiest Foods… Which List to Follow (Part 3 of 3)

Vegan, vegetarian, omnivore, carnivore, herbivore, lacto-ovo vegetarian, pesca-vegetarian… which one are you? I happen to be a combination of the last two. Which ever you may be, do your best to not become a fanatic – listen to your body instead. There is no one-size-fits-all to anything. I based my list on expert lists as well as what I like to eat. With that, here the last of my “Top 10.”

Raw milk: There may be some of  you out there who do not like “regular” milk (I was one of those), those who are lactose intolerant, and those that need more enzyme and probiotics in their diet, actually we all do. I include milk because it can be healthy in moderation, a great source of calcium, protein, Vitamin A & D, and omega-3. Having met the founder of organic pastures (they produce raw milk), I am now a regular drinker of it. Raw milk, I might add does not produce mucus like the heated homogenized/pasteurized versions.

Turmeric/garlic/onions: I overlapped spices with condiments and vegetables because they are all so important and used to flavor food, so I list them as one. Turmeric is great for arthritis, the liver, detoxing, and the eyes. Garlic is excellent for practically whatever ails you including: parasites, cancer, cholesterol, blood pressure issues, immune, and heart. It is anti-viral/microbial/oxidant, which also helps keep weight under control.  Onions and turmeric are both anti-inflammatory, while garlic and onions are both excellent for cancer, blood pressure, anti-viral, anti-oxidant, and heart. Onions are good for asthma, bones, and a great source of Vitamin K.

Wild Salmon: This is another food that is anti-inflammatory, good for the brain, heart, and memory. It is a great source of omega-3’s and because of the “good” fat; it is beneficial for blood sugar issues. It is also a great source of protein and minerals. “Anti-inflammatory”… is not only great to prevent disease, but wrinkles as well.

This “Top 10” includes more common foods that others may like or may be more apt to try. It is balanced because it incorporates main dish, side dishes, snacks, breakfast, lunch, dinner ingredients and the oil and spices to cook. I also included 2 types of drinks, though I don’t recommend people drink while they eat.

If one is ill or diagnosed with disease, a plant based diet can do wonders.

Vegetarian Meal Idea

This past week a 15 year old niece asked me for some vegetarian meal ideas. Since I’ve been a vegetarian with bouts of vegan since 1973, she came to the right person. And… her parents knowing I have “survived” all these years being a tad different, they know she’s in good hands.

So! I sent her Chapter 17 from my book and a photo of what I ate last night. Total preparation and cooking  was 30 minutes.

Vegetarian Soup

Ingredients:Tomato Soup Base

16 ounces tomato base for broth
4 cloves Garlic
1 small bell pepper
1 dozen Okra
1 small Avocado
1 egg
Parmesan cheese

Hard boil egg. Sauté chopped garlic and bell peppers. Steam chopped okra separate (or you can sauté with other veggies). Pour tomato base over and heat thoroughly until hot.

Tomato Veggie SoupIn a soup bowl, grate hard boil egg and dice avocado. Pour hot soup over and sprinkle with Parmesan. Easy and delicious! Soup base and veggie can be your choice. Aside from tomato base, soup is made from scratch. All other ingredients are local and organic, except the cheese.

A photographer I am not, but this gives you an idea how chunky (and filling) soup can be.

To succeed as a vegetarian, ease into it and make it colorful. More colors, more vitamins!

Egg Tacos? a whole new way to eat huevos rancheros

In weaning myself off food to do the Master Cleanse for the 21st Century, I am using up whatever food is in the fridge. Having had some lil ones over for summer break last weekend, I had some left over corn tortillas (from quesadilla snacks) and a few brown eggs.

Being a lacto-ovo-vegetarian with days of  vegan and raw food mixed in here and there, these are ingredients I don’t have very often. The eggs need to be smothered with spices so I can’t smell them, cheese I love, just try not to eat it alone, and tortillas are like popcorn, my taste buds like it but my body doesn’t. The older I get the more I feed my body, not my taste buds… the belly and brain operate and look better that way.

The tasty tacos consisted of:

  • cook 2 eggs any way you prefer – since I am weaning myself off food, I cooked them over medium and seasoned them with cayenne, turmeric and Himalayan salt.
  • warm up 2 corn tortillas
  • spread your choice of topping… I used real butter, you can use humus, mayo, pesto, a tomato sauce, etc.
  • I added lettuce, 1 egg per tortilla, and tomatoes

They were simply DIVINE!

Note** Huevos Rancheros are eggs placed atop tortillas with fixings on the side. These tacos are a much healthier way to eat both. I also use organic ingredients.
